NEW OPENING FOR CHIEF OF POLICE

Job Opening: Chief of Police

Reports to: Township Administrator and Board of Township Trustees

Job Description:

The Chief of Police is the chief administrator of the Austintown Police Department and is responsible for its operation and management in accordance with the general policies of the Board of Trustees and the Township Administrator, with wide latitude for exercising administrative judgement and initiative. The position requires administrative and technical police work of a difficult and responsible nature in directing and coordinating the activities of the Police Department. The Chief of Police is the final department authority in all matters.

Appointment and Qualifications:

The Chief of Police is an unclassified position appointed by the Board of Trustees in accordance with ORC 505.49 and reports to them through the Township administrator.

Minimum qualifications will be determined by the Austintown Board of Trustees.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Typical duties, responsibilities, tasks, and assignments of the Chief of Police include:

  • Plans, develops, directs, coordinates, controls, and staffs the township police services and directs through subordinate personnel all police activities for effective and efficient operation in the protection of life and property, preservation of peace and order, prevention, suppression and investigation of crime, arrest and prosecution of offenders, recovery and return of stolen property, and regulation of traffic.
  •  Analyzes reports and observes operations, conditions, facilities, equipment, and technology to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of police services.
  • Confers with staff and others in regard to police functions, services, and operations.
  • Formulates and implements mission, philosophy, strategies, tactics, policies, procedures, and methods of operation as needed to improve services or respond to changing circumstances.
  • Directs and controls departmental personnel activities, including recruitment, selection, assignment, promotion, discipline, grievances, commendations ad complaints within the requirements of the law, collective bargaining agreements and township policies and procedures.
  • May participate with the Township Administrator in labor negotiations.
  • Directs and controls departmental training activities, ensuring that all members of the department receive initial basic training upon appointment and continued in-service training and continuing education to meet departmental and professional standards.
  • Obtains authority from the Board of Trustees, the Township Administrator and the Township Fiscal Officer as required to enter into contracts or expend township funds.
  • Approves expenditures in accordance with law and established township policy.
  • Reviews all bills and invoices for correctness before forwarding them to the Township Fiscal Office for payment.
  • Participates in the township’s annual budget and administers the budget. Applies for grants and other alternative funding where appropriate. Ensures grants are administered in accordance with established guidelines for expenditures and reporting.
  • Ensures that all property coming into the possession of the Police Department is safely kept, properly disposed of, and accurately recorded.
  • Keeps the Board of Trustees informed, through the Administrator, of events, activities or circumstances that may affect public or official relations.
  • Attends regular and special meetings of the Board and meets with the Administrator and other department heads to conduct township business.
  • Represents the Police Department in relationships with other governmental agencies. Servies on boards or committees of governmental or professional organizations with regard to crime prevention, law enforcement and public safety.
  • Attends civic or other functions and communicates with the media to promote the safety of the community and the public relations of the department.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Administrator.

Join Our Team: Full-Time Dispatcher Wanted


         The Austintown Police Department is currently looking for qualified applicants who are interested in being a 911 Dispatcher with our department.

         The minimum requirements for the position of a dispatcher are U.S. citizen, 18 years old, high school diploma or GED, valid Ohio Driver’s License and must possess above average computer, typing skills and multi-tasking ability. Preference will be given to those with experience in any public safety field. Starting wage is $19.56* per hour, increasing to $20.81* hourly following probationary training period. Top pay (25.72*) achieved after 3 years completed full-time service. Vacation and longevity credit for years of service in OPERS.

         Interested applicants can pick up an application at the department, or from our website at www.austintowntwp.com. Once completed, return the application to our department. Applications will then be screened and those selected will be considered for the next full-time dispatch position. This process will begin with an initial interview and a CritiCall Computer Assessment Test. The next steps are a background check and a voice stress test. The final phase includes a drug screening and a medical exam.
